3 Reasons Why Healthcare Providers and Caregivers Should Make Self-Care a priority.

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

Did you know...

  1. Caregivers are 30% more likely to die before the person they are caring for.

  2. Hospitals and skilled nursing facilities have reported approximately 29% of their staff have been diagnosed with COVID.

  3. Nurses, LPNs and CNA's are 26% more likely to receive a positive diagnosis.

What does this mean?

This means that our healthcare providers and our caregivers deserve a break and need care.

There comes a time when we must pay attention to what causes a system to break down. Our bodies communicate with us in a similar way. For example, when we are hungry, our stomach will start growling, we'll get something to eat. When we pick something up from the floor that is too heavy, our shoulders and/or back muscles may be sore the next day. Some of us may get a massage. If we drink too much alcohol on an empty stomach, we may experience a hangover. As a result, we may stay in bed a little longer to sleep it off. Once we figure out what we did to make a situation happen, we usually take time to rest or care for ourselves.

Our healthcare providers and caregivers are overworked. Many of them have quit and chosen other careers. Those who have decided to stay in the field must make time for themselves.

Taking time for yourself increases the likelihood of overall wellness.

This means...

  1. Getting 6 to 8 hours of rest.

  2. Fitting in an exercise regimen.

  3. Increasing your intake of water.

  4. Increasing fresh fruits and vegetables.

  5. Leaving work when your shift ends.

  6. Don't take on more than you can handle.

  7. Understand that you are only one person. Caring for yourself first, allows you to care for others, better.
