Not Just Another Holiday Weekend

As we approach Martin Luther King's birthday weekend, it is a good time to reflect on our personal care and why we celebrate. Many of us have decided to make New Year's resolutions. Some of us decided to change our diet and eat healthier. Others have decided to set goals to reduce their spending habits in order to purchase that much-needed repair for their home or vehicle. Whatever the decision made, check in with yourself to make certain you are on track to reaching your goals. In addition to these goals, let's make it a point to celebrate the fact that we have a holiday to remember Martin Luther King.

Martin sacrificed his life for us to have the freedom to make choices. We can choose to go to a grocery store that has healthier food to purchase. We can choose to take a higher-paying job or create a business to increase our saving potential and live more comfortably. I appreciate Martin Luther King for this and so much more.

Many of us use a holiday to spend money and eat more. If your plan is to reach your goal of saving money or eating better, this may take you off your course. It may be a good idea to create a small budget and save ten to fifty dollars a week, just for casual spending to ensure that overspending is less likely. If you plan to eat out, make it a light meal. Or just eat half and save the rest for later.

Martin Luther King made huge sacrifices for us to be able to appreciate the simple things in our lives, many of which we take for granted. In the spirit of Martin, let us approach our goals with a small percentage of what Martin did to change our lives. Thank you, MLK!

Wishing you and your family a Happy Martin Luther King Day!
