How Important Is Vitamin C For Our Immune System, Should We Consume It Daily?

Vitamin C Is Found In Several Fruits And Vegetables. When Consumed Daily, It Yields Great Results.

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that assists the body with several critical bodily functions. It plays an important role in the development, growth, and repair of our body's tissues. Below are some essential reasons why vitamin C is important for our bodies:

  1. Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen. A protein that assists in the formation of skin, blood vessels, bones, and connective tissues. Collagen is critical for wound healing and maintaining the structural integrity of several body parts.

  2. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It helps to protect our cells from damage which are caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are produced during normal cellular processes. Because we are exposed to several environmental factors like pollution and UV radiation daily, vitamin C assists with that protection. Antioxidants are capable of neutralizing these free radicals while reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

  3. Vitamin C supports the immune system by activating the production and function of white blood cells. In addition, it assists the body to absorb iron from plant-based foods to further support immune function.

  4. Vitamin C plays a vital role in wound healing which is the formation of new blood vessels and the repair of tissues.

  5. Vitamin C is crucial for the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are important for mood regulation and overall mental well-being.

It is important to note that vitamin C is good for overall health. However, the body does not store it, and it is not synthesized naturally. Therefore, it is necessary to get an adequate amount daily. Vitamin C can be acquired through a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, kiwis, bell peppers, and broccoli.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C usually varies by age, sex, and life stage. It is recommended for adults to consume at least 75-90 mg of vitamin C per day. Keep in mind that individual needs will vary. Certain factors such as smoking, illness, and pregnancy can increase the body's requirements for vitamin C.

It is best to get vitamins and minerals from a diversified and balanced diet rather than relying on supplements. Whole foods provide a good range of nutrients and compounds that work together synergistically. However, some individuals may have difficulty meeting their vitamin C needs through diet alone. Supplements should be considered under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Finally, vitamin C is important for various bodily functions. Getting an adequate amount daily is essential for your overall health and well-being. Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet is a great way to ensure you meet your daily vitamin C requirements.
