What Is Olestra & What Can It Do To Our Digestive System?

Checking The Ingredients In Processed Foods Before You Buy Them Is Key.

Olestra is a fat substitute that was developed by Procter & Gamble (P&G). It is used in some food products to eliminate or reduce fat content. It is a synthetic compound that cannot be absorbed by our body's digestive system. This means it passes directly through our digestive tract without being metabolized.

Olestra is used to produce fat-free or reduced-fat snacks such as potato chips and other fried or baked goods. Because the human body is unable to absorb Olestra, it cannot produce calories. This sounds very beneficial for people who want to reduce their calorie intake and manage their weight.

However, Olestra has been linked to some serious digestive side effects as it can pass through the digestive system largely intact. As a result, this can lead to abdominal cramping and loose stools while increasing the urgency of bowel movements. These side effects are known as "Olestra-induced anal leakage" or "Olestra diarrhea."

It is important for individuals to be informed and aware of how their bodies respond to Olestra. Products that contain Olestra come with warning lables due to the digestive side effects. Consumers should try and avoid purchasing these products or consume them moderatly.

It is important to note that in recent years the use of Olestra has decreased. There may be some potential benefits as is can possibly reduce calorie intake. However, due to its digestive side effects, it has decline in popularity.
