Fresh Is Best.
There are some fruits and vegetables that may benefit from refrigeration to extend their freshness. Many are better stored at room temperature. Storing certain fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator has the potential to reduce flavor, and alter the texture, as well as affect the overall quality. Below are some examples of fruits and vegetables that are not recommended for storage in the refrigerator:
Tomatoes: Refrigerating tomatoes can alter the texture and dull the flavor. It is best to allow them to ripen at room temperature. Avocados: Avocados should be kept on the counter to ripen and then placed into the refrigerator if needed. If they are already ripe once received from the store, it is ok to store them in the refrigerator. This will slow down the ripening process.
Bananas: Bananas are best stored at room temperature. Placing them in the refrigerator can cause the skin to darken. However, the fruit inside will still be fine.
Citrus fruits (e.g., oranges, lemons, limes): Citrus fruits can be stored at room temperature for about a week. If you are not planning to use them by that time, store them in the refrigerator.
Potatoes: Storing potatoes in the refrigerator will quickly cause the starches to turn into sugar. This will also affect their taste and texture. They are best stored in a cool, dark place.
Onions: Onions are also best stored in a cool, dry place with good ventilation. Refrigerating them can make them soft and moldy.
Garlic: garlic is very similar to onions. They too should be stored in a cool, dry place. Refrigerating them can cause sprouting.
Melons (e.g., watermelon, cantaloupe): Whole melons should be stored at room temperature until they are cut. Place the remainder of the fruit in refrigerated.
Pineapple: Pineapples should be stored at room temperature until they ripen. Once they are ripe, place them in the refrigerator for a few days.
Stone fruits (e.g., peaches, plums, nectarines): Stone fruits should be allowed to ripen at room temperature. Refrigerate them to slow further ripening.
It is important to note that everyone has their preferences as well as specific varieties of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, it is always a good idea to check for any specific recommendations for the produce you enjoy. Keep in mind that once fruits and vegetables are cut, it is advisable to refrigerate them to prevent spoilage.
